Supply teaching and induction

Dear Jobs Doctor

I completed my PGCE in June 2013 and for the past academic year I’ve been working for a staffing agency on both a supply and long-term contract basis.  During this time I’ve successfully completed two terms of my NQT induction.   I now have an opportunity to work with children overseas, but I’m concerned about the length of time I’m taking to complete my induction.  If I return to the UK in 6 months time and find another contract through which to finish my induction, would this appear unusual on my C.V. and would this be to the detriment of my future career?  I have an incredible opportunity to work with disadvantaged children in Africa and I really want to take it.

Joanne Short, NQT Primary Teacher, West London

Dear Joanne,

It’s becoming increasingly popular to carry out NQT induction in several different schools a term at a time. It’s a great way in which to increase your experience across various types of schools and further develop your teaching skill set particularly in dealing with children from a variety of backgrounds and different educational needs. I would always suggest experiencing as many different educational environments as is possible as this will give you a deeper knowledge and understanding as to how the locality affects an individuals learning and development of relationships. If this means completing your NQT induction, a term at a time, in different schools within 2 years, this is fine.   I would not however recommend completing induction over any longer period of time, as curriculums are ever evolving and can quickly change.
